"Isn't being cool all about looking totally unconcerned about something cool you have?"
Although your post is halka phulka, it touches some deep truths! Especially the subtle way in which you indicated that strangers in Delhi didn't quite judge you with the same keenness that people who knew the regular you, did.
This post reminds me of the time when I traded my shoulder-length mop of hair for a shorter, radical looking haircut a year ago. I grew used to myself in the mirror over the weekend, but was dreading the mirror that mattered: those in the eyes of my office mates, or people I run into everyday.
Some jibes, some praises, and some pitiful glances later, I realised it was all about the importance I attached to it!!! The power is with us, not them! And often, we choose to give it to them.
Rock on with your IPod. Kuch toh log kahenge. Since you have the IPod wires 'snaking' their way to your ears, you shouldn't worry...I need not say ek kaan se suno aur ek se nikaalo.

i wonder what is important the song or the pod? i wonder what is important my ears or someone's eyes? i wonder what is important senses or nonsenses? i wonder what is important being cool within or being cool with some gadgets?

a very candid account, Mr Jauhari and very well narrated too. i can almost see myself in your shoes (with those white wires around my neck)
also, there could be a third option with Diana Hayden : She didnt care :) (considering the fact that you see so many i-podwaalas on flights etc)
interestingly(and being a total music lover), i havent got into the i-pod scheme of things yet. havent felt the need yet..someday, perhaps.

LOL nice post...I have a Creative PMP and I've been doing the same and getting wierd looks since the time I started using it...moving around with music plugged in is a cool thing so the stares obviously must mean "cool".
